Movie Review: The Reader
By Fly Higher
A love affair has blossomed between an old woman and a young student. It all started when the woman helped the young man who was feeling sick at that time and invited him to come into her house since she lives near the place where they were. While he was about to leave the house he peeked into the little opening of the woman's bedroom door and saw her undressing, probably arousing his manhood because he came back again on the next day to see her again and eventually they had sex. Everytime they would do it, the woman would ask the young man to first read to her a story taken from one of the books he brought with him. It has been like this until, without him knowing, it seems that he has already forgotten that he has his studies to attend to, that he got his family and friends to mingle with, and that there is a wide gap between them that they cannot lie about. Maybe because of this the woman left him, and a letter without telling him her whereabouts. This has crushed the young man's heart. How could she do that to him, he would have thought. Over the next few years he enters college as a law student. World War II has passed and everyone has moved on. Well, probably not, because by this time he never thought that one day they would cross their paths. He knew it is her even for so many years they haven't seen each other. She seemed to have grown gray hairs already. Likewise, she never heard of him or seen him or know what he looked like today or what has become of him ever since she left him. Separations between two people who have grown to like each other, who have already decided to only love one another and then the bond between the two of them breaks. How much pain does one have to endure many years of longing to find each other's presence? Then one day you crossed paths, will you ever try to accept them back, forgive them for what they have done, let everything go as if nothing had happened and start a new life with them?

I'm not a movie goer, but your review makes this one compelling. Thank you for sharing. Best to you. Frederick
I was expecting there to be a wooden vase with flowers in it at the end. Reading can be hazardous sometimes.
Quite an interesting story, and a surprising twist. One would expect the younger man to leave the woman. She must have been quite the cougar. It must be difficult to tell a story like this without everything coming across as sordid.
